The Courtyard

The Courtyard provides an opulent setting for outdoor events including barbecues and summer parties – a rare find in central London.

This stunning outdoor space is always hired in conjunction with equally attractive indoor spaces – The Snow, Paget or Great Hall.

The key features of The Courtyard which make it so spectacular for corporate and private events alike are its two war memorials – the Gates of Remembrance which commemorate the 574 members of the BMA who died in the First World War; and the central fountain, made of bronze featuring the staff of Asclepius (God of Medicine) with four statues representing sacrifice, cure, prevention and aspiration and which form a memorial to the medical men and women who died in the Second World War.

Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the Memorial Gates were dedicated by the Archbishop of Canterbury on the same day as the official opening of BMA House in 1925. The fountain was designed in 1954 by sculptor James Woodford.
